Help South Los Angeles Residents build a better future with the

COVID-19 Retraining & Recovery Fund (CORE)

Many South LA families and residents were already economically vulnerable and insecure before the COVID-19 pandemic. But furloughs, reductions in wages and hours, and lack of access to educational resources for their children has increased their financial and emotional stress. With tens of thousands in South LA already having lost their jobs in industries that cannot telework, many are now at risk of slipping from poverty to extreme poverty or homelessness.

With no guarantee of a return to the same place of work and the possibility of prolonged economic hardship amid an erratic and shifting job market, these residents will require retraining and recertification to earn a living.

To respond to these challenges, SoLa Impact, Ashley and Marc Merrill and their family office NAHCO3 and others are launching the COVID-19 Retraining & Recovery Fund (CORE), an educational and career building initiative with an initial investment of $250,000 and a target of $1,000,000.

CORE will offer scholarships to South LA residents furloughed, laid-off or facing economic distress due to COVID-19 to enable them to attend a certified retraining program in careers that are likely to be in high demand in a post-COVID economy, particularly in healthcare, online education, and technology.

Our vision is to inspire our neighbors and community to look beyond the current crisis to the day after, and help spur long term economic growth and security in South LA through scholarships and career development support. It’s about giving a hand “up”, not a hand “out” and using the power of our economy to invest in the lives of people who need it.

CORE will partner with local and national educational institutions such as Los Angeles Trade Technical College, East Los Angeles Community College, California State Universities Long Beach, Los Angeles and Dominguez Hills, Cornell University Online, Oregon State University Online and other vocational and technical schools to help ensure students commit and complete recertification programs paired with job placement and technical assistance services.
