I CAN!

Delivering Experiences, Impacting Lives

“If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.” The SoLa I CAN! Foundation’s mission is to inspire South Los Angeles youth to see possibility and opportunity in their lives and strive to achieve academic and personal success. Our goal is to introduce youth to people, places and things they would not normally or easily experience in their daily lives.

SoLa is partnering with youth programs and universities to give kids ages 5 and up experiences that will empower them, inspire positive identity development and life goal achievement.

I CAN BE A COLLEGE STUDENT! College Bound

SoLa gives our tenants' children and youth in the South LA community the opportunities and resources to build their resumes and become college ready. The SoLa College Bound program includes college campus tours, summer immersion at UCLA, tutoring, SAT prep, pairing students with a college coach who assists and guides students through the entire

application process and financial aid search.

I CAN BE A MILLIONAIRE! Financial Literacy

We know that possible outcomes from financial education include greater levels of savings, use of bank accounts, and improved credit behavior.

SoLa has partnered with “Operation Hope LA” and Chase Bank to help provide financial education to our tenants and their children. After the sessions, our neighborhood Chase branch opens its doors after hours so the kids can open their first savings accounts.

I CAN BE A MARINE NATURALIST!

The I Can Program set sail with 21 SoLa kids to show them what it's like to be a marine biologist. For most of the kids, it was the first time ever on a boat.

I CAN BE A SCIENTIST!

The SoLa I Can program recently partnered with Cal State University, Los Angeles to give our tenants’ children the opportunity to explore the scientific careers of Botany, Chemistry and Engineering through fun, hands-on activities and experiments in a college classroom environment.

I CAN BE A FIREFIGHTER!

SoLa brought together 22 kids ages 5 to 17 to be a “Firefighter For The Day”. Station 57 firefighters on Vermont Ave shared their experiences and journeys of becoming and being a firefighter. The kids were in awe as they toured the firehouse, climbed aboard the massive fire truck and watched as two firefighters exhibited how quickly they could suit up. A number of the kids who participated are now planning to join the young cadets program for youth ages 14 and up.

I CAN BE AN ARTIST!

Studies have shown that museums not only give kids a greater appreciation for art, they lead to higher levels of critical thinking, offer a dynamic opportunity to expose children to experiences and explore new things in a rich and educational environment.

SoLa Impact exposes South LA youth to local museums including LACMA, the Natural History Museum, the California Science Center, the Griffith Observatory and the La Brea Tar Pits.

Introductory Fine Arts Class

Fine arts education has been proven to increase the academic achievements, development, civic engagement, and the opportunities of the students that participate in it.

Through a partnership with Mission’s Renaissance Los Angeles, SoLa hosts fine arts sessions for youth 5 and up.  Students gain a foundation in how to draw and how to paint. Using a charcoal pencil and pastels, the students will learn to build a drawing through the use of simple shapes and then how to create colorful, 3-dimensional effects, resulting in their finished work looking more life-like.
